Whose responsibility is it anyway, our success...? 'Oh, it's mine, all mine', most of us 'in the know' say. 'Oh yes, I am totally responsible for my experiences, my take on life, my attitudes, my successes and my failures'. Then we quietly abdicate responsibility to others around us...asking others' opinions and then backtracking on ideas we've had, asking for permission and waiting for it to be given, thinking the next person is more right than us.
Being a team player is about making a significant contribution to the team, a contribution that is all yours. The team relies on each and every one of its players. Winning teams are full of individuals who both understand and respect the team values and direction and then use all their own talent and drive to achieve results. Rio Ferdinand said the number one thing he hated about being a footballer was losing. That means he totally owns his responsibility for winning.
You don't see footballers waiting around the pitch for the rest of the team to give them permission to strike or tackle. They are in the game, they triumph, they screw up, probably in equal measure.
In business teams that are at the top of their game then it's the same thing. They have good leadership and they believe and respect the values and the vision for the business. They know the part they play and they play it as an individual, bringing every ounce of their talent to the table.
In weak business teams the balance is off, one person dictates the way individuals play, struggles are going on under the surface, hidden, unspoken. Everyone worried in case the other doesn't agree, everyone doing their own thing.
As we are heading into more squalls next year it's best if you are in the right team and giving your contribution fully.
Here are a few thought provokers...
1 Whose team is it anyway? - Who is the leader? What is the vision? What is the strategy to get there? Who is performing and how?
2 Who are we serving? - Become closer to the customers you are serving. Who are they? What do they want? And what must you do to deliver that?
3 What needs to change to make that happen? People, skills, technologies, processes, pricing, supply chain, branding?
4 How will you know when you get there? What will you measure to decide that you are going in the right direction? Cashflow? Profit? Orders? Happiness? Opportunities? Prestige?
5 How will you build innovation and progress into your team activities? How will you redefine the vision? How will you bust market myths that you have believed up until now?
It's all about you. It's all about what you will do and what you won't do. As Robert De Niro brilliantly said in Raging Bull,
'The Talent Is In The Choices'.
Have a great day. But not just because I said so ;)
